Iltakukkia - Night Flowers

Kun muutimme tähän taloon kolme vuotta sitten, pihalla rehotti kaikenlaista kasvia ja rikkaruohoa. Siellä oli mm. iso kaktus. Mutta sitten siellä oli tällainen tummanvihreä pensasmainen kasvi, jonka kukat aukesivat illalla, auringon laskiessa. Me asuimme vielä edellisessä talossa kuukauden, ennenkuin muutimme vuokrataloomme, joten puutarhassa oli kovat - kuumat- paikat. Kasvien piti selvitä heinäkuu hengissä ilman säännöllistä kastelua. Ja tämä kasvi kesti.

When we moved into this house three years ago, there were all kinds of weeds and plants growing on the yard. Including a big cactus. But then there was this dark green bushlike plant, whose flowers started to open in the evening, at sunset. We had to live in the previous house one more month before we moved into our rented home, so it was tough - and hot- time for the plants. They had to survive the month of July without regular watering. And this plant made it!

Muuton jälkeen olemme kokeilleet kukkien istuttamista vaihtelevin tuloksin. Kaikessa rehellisyydessä täytyy sanoa, että aika huonoin tuloksin. Kannoimme ja pyysimme sukulaisia lähettämään siemenpusseja ympäri maailmaa, mutta mikään ei ole täällä oikein kukoistanut. Päätin palata kasveihin, jotka ovat osoittaneet kestävyytensä Keski-Aasian kuumassa ja kosteassa kesässä.

After the move we have tried planting flower with various results. To be honest, mostly with poor results. We carried in and asked relatives to send us seed packages from all over the world, but those plants did not take on very well. I decided to concentrate on plants that have proved they can take the hot and humid summer of Central Asia.

Alkuperäiset kasvit olivat tätä aniliininpunaista väriä. Aniliininpunaisesta tulee mieleen seiskaluokan käsityöprojekti, jolloin päätin ommella itselleni aniliininpunaiset collegehousut mustilla polvipaikoilla. Älä kysy. Mulla ei ole paljonkaan muotitietoa.

The original plants were of this color (what do you call this in English?). It reminds me of home economics class on seventh grade when I went and sewed a pair of sweatpants of this color, with black patches on the knees. Do not ask. I do not have much sense of fashion.

Niinpä kun nämä uudet kasvit alkoivat kukkia, oli kaunis yllätys nähdä valkoisia, ja jopa noita kaksivärisiä kukkia. Sittemmin olen nähnyt tätä kasvia myös keltaisena. Tässä kuvassa näkyy kukan hauskan ohut varsi.

So when these newly planted bushes started to flower, it was a wonderful surprise to see white and even striped and dotted flowers. Since then I have also seen yellow flowers. In this picture you can see the fun, skinny stem of the flower.

Kukat aukeavat hetki ennen auringonlaskua, ja sulkeutuvat nupuiksi taas auringon noustua.

Paikallinen nimi onkin Yökukka.

The flowers open just moments before the sunset and close again after the sunrise.

The locals call this the Night Flower.
