Time has stopped at Ancient Corinth

Most homes in Central Asia have only one clock. We know of times when people were late because the batteries in this one clock were done. People rarely have watches and as mine didn't survive the latest toddler attack, I have grown accustomed of not wearing one.

I find it hard not to pay attention to the clock.  (Of course now with mobile phones anyone could, in principle, know what time it is...)

Vacations are different. I stop and when I reach the state when I am not sure if it's Wednesday or Saturday, I call it a success!

We visited a place where time truly has stopped.  Ancient Corinth.

The site has a museum with sculptures, busts of Roman rulers, pottery and other findings from the city.  The terracotta body parts caused giggles among the kids. Yes, I guess people found it important to make sculptures of those parts, as offerings to Asklepios, god of medicine!  (The museum building also has toilets, which is important to know if you go there with kids, air conditioning and the tap water is drinkable!)

I love the details carved in stone. I wonder how much time this piece took? And what kind of tools did they use? 

The temple of Octavia, built in honor of Octavia, sister of Emperor Augustus and wife to Mark Antony, possibly after her visit to the city of Corinth.  It represents the imperial cult of Rome.  All that remains from the temple are three ornate Corinthian columns. On top of them lies a restored architrave.

Ancient Corinth has been a busy place since 6500 BC. Yes, I know, it's ancient :)  Most of the surviving buildings are Roman rather than Greek.

Eppu did well at the site. He could run and climb and it kept him happy.  Sun was out and we got there mid morning, so it was hot. We used the trees for shade every now and then.  Hats or umbrellas are a good idea! 

The city has been destroyed and rebuild many times.  For example Julius Caesar refounded the city as Colonia Laus Iulia Corinthiensis (‘colony of Corinth in honour of Julius’) in 44 BC, shortly before his assassination. 

 Apostle Paul visited Corinth between 51 and 53 AC and he wrote letters to the church there. The verse above is from the second letter.  The rock stands on top of the Bema, a public platform, where at a public hearing, Paul had to defend himself against accusations from the city’s Hebrews that his preaching undermined the Mosiac Law. The pro-consul Lucius Julius Gallio judged that Paul had not broken any Roman Law and so was permitted to continue his teachings.  

Corinth became the centre of early Christianity in Greece. Paul became acquainted with Aquila and Priscilla, who became his fellow-workers. He stayed in Corinth for 1,5 years. 

The city was destroyed during the Greek War of Independence, 1821–1830.  

In 1858, the village surrounding the ruins of Ancient Corinth was totally destroyed by an earthquake, leading to the establishment of New Corinth 3 km NE of the ancient city.

There is still a village surrounding the Ancient ruins. We drove here and there on narrow roads, trying to find our way to the site. Somehow the Google maps didn't quite find the most commonly used road, so we took the road less traveled!

The majority of the other surviving buildings also include a large forum, baths, the Asklepeion temple to Asclepius, and a centre of healing, fountains - including the monumental Peirine fountain complex (2nd century CE) - a propylaea, theatre, odeion, gymnasium, and stoas. There are also the remains of three basilicas.

I am amazed that the road is still there...Smooth and totally usable, even with cracks.

On top of that hill is a fortress that is worth visiting, we heard. However, our "half a day of sightseeing" was running its course and we had to get back for some water time!

I have to mention that there are several cafeterias, markets and souvenir shops right next to the area. I bought a little kitty cat, as it is my tradition to buy a cat sculpture from every country we visit.

Visiting this kinds of places has been great for the kids and homeschooling. They have been studying ancient Greek history, so seeing the actual places has made the lessons come alive for them.  

Kreikkalainen kesä - A Greek Summer

Olen kirjoittanut lapsiperheen matkustamisesta lähinnä Keski-Aasian alueella. Tällä kertaa nautimme kesäilmoista Euroopan kamaralla, Kreikassa, jossa olemme ihan ensimmäistä kertaa.

I have written about travelling with children mainly in Central Asian area. This time we are enjoying summer weather in Europe, Greece, where we are for the very first time. 

Kun suunnittelimme matkaa, päätimme skipata Kreikan saaret ja asetuimme ensin Korintton alueelle ja sitten Ateenaan ja sen lähiympäristöön, Saarien skippaukseen vaikuttivat turistirysät (kuka teistä ei ole muka käynyt Kreikan saarilla?) ja hinta. Päätimme, että päivämatkat saarille sopivat meille paremmin, jos tuntuu, että niissä pitää käydä.

While planning the trip we decided to skip the Greek Islands and chose areas around Corinth and Athens as places to visit. The crowds of tourists (for example half of the Finns visit Greek Islands at some point of their lives) and the prices of hotels in the islands were too much for us at this time. We can do a day trip to one of the islands if we feel like visiting. 

Ajelimme vuokra-autolla rannikolla ja tottakai jäätelönsyönti rannalla kuuluu lapsiperheen matkantekoon. Aika hintavia olivat nämä kadulla myytävät jätskit, mitään ei saa alle eurolla, kannattaa budjetoida 2 egee per jätski jos haluaa jotain muuta kuin mehupuikkoa.

We drove along the coast with a rental car and did the mandatory kid friendly ice cream stop at a beach. Unless you love popsicles, budget about 2 euros for each ice cream. Not cheap! 

 

Meidän lapset voisivat viettää päivänsä vedessä, mutta onhan se kiva nyt nähdä jotain muutakin kun kerran Kreikassa ollaan. Puolen päivän reissut ovat sellaisia, joissa koko perhe jaksaa katsella näkymiä, kunhan loppupäivä lekotellaan veden äärellä. Osa perheestä olisi halunnut purjehtia, mutta piti tyytyä ihailemaan veneitä laiturilta...

Our kids could live in water, but it's nice to see something else once we have travelled this far. Half a day seems to be a good sightseeing trip, as soon as we go back to the water for the rest of the day!  Some of us wanted to go sailing, but we had to settle for just looking at the boats... 

Kreikasta: Etelä-Eurooppa on kyllä oma eläimensä ja montaa asiaa ihmettelee SääntöSuomesta kotoisin oleva. Mutta tykkään tosi paljon talojen ikkunaluukuista, joka paikassa olevista kukkivista pensaista ja puista sekä vähän ränsistyneestä asumistyylistä.  Ei sen kaiken tarvi olla niin justiinsa :)

If you are from a rule following Northern European country, you might wonder about many things in Greece. I loved the shutters on windows, flowering trees and bushes that seem to be everywhere and general rustic feel of the houses.

Of course, this picture is expired already, as one of the kids made a move clockwise, but it was fun as long as it lasted!

Happy Birthday ...and Surprise!!!

A story of a girl who is not afraid of cold.

She was born 12 years ago. 

She was 2 weeks old when she moved for the first time. Her first move, 6 hours north, was spend snug and happy in a cot, surrounded by boxes and bags and suitcases in a caravan that was so full that you could not enter through the back door.  

During her first year she was on over ten flights, always peaceful. She moved with her family 5 times before they settled in a little, newly remodeled apartment that was their home, where she had her own rose bud room and a gray kitten. 

She is smart and funny and brave.

Loves to read, have sleepovers with her friends, and take care of animals.  

Tall and slender, with long thick hair and blue eyes. 

And would live in the water if we let her!

Now, this year we just might... because...

For her birthday she got a pool. Of course, it is for the whole family, but we filled it for the first time for her Birthday Pool Party! 

And we combined it with a sleepover, so it was perfect.  

We had prepared party games and things to do - but the girls spend the whole time in the pool and the sauna. 

After dinner and a movie I think they might have slept, but by 7 am they were back in the pool, and had sauna going.

True story.

The pool is used every day, multiple times by different groups of kids and adults.  Happy times!

In honor of the last day of spring!  Navruz and girls gymnastics group took us in the middle of celebrations.  I snapped some photos when we walked through the park. 

Juhlakatu oli valmiina tärkeitä vieraita varten. Ehdimme sinne juuri kun kojut suljettiin tavalliselta kansalta, joten en ottanut montakaan kuvaa.  

The celebration street is ready for the important guests. We got there just moments after it was closed for the common folk, so I did not take many pictures.

Alaska visits mountains for the first time

Meet Alaska.

She is our 4 month old puppy. We found a home for the other puppies, but just couldn't depart form her white fluffiness and mischievous mind.  

This is her first time in the mountains.

To get to the mountains you need to sit in the car.

Alaska didn't like it, but luckily we had some water and rags to clean the car up after we got there...

See the little muddy legs?  She had great time!

Kids loved to walk her.  

 

Mountains are a great places to let the little ones explore, run, have fun and get tired...

First competition

Our son started kickboxing in September.  He woke up counting: “8 hours and 30 minutes to the practice!” and would announce before lunch: "Still 3 more hours!".   We thought it will be an excellent way to use some of the boy energy that causes him to run, jump and bounce at all times. 

This spring the long practice hours payed off: he was ready to participate in his first competition. He would fight two other boys that were in his group.  I arrived in the old factory building where the boys practice every afternoon.  I entered the room on the second floor just as two boys in the middle of the room jumped at each other.  They were hitting and kicking each other! 

- Wow. This is real fighting! I don’t know what I had been expecting, but not this.  The hits aimed at the face that made the recipient duck and throw up his arms to protect his face.  The kicks on the side. Wham! The protective gear was shaking under the attacks. 

- Yeah, this is real, said our friend who met me at the door. I'm sure he wanted to add a big Duh! 

But I felt the need to have my summer camp leader personality to take over.  I wanted to run to the boys, hold their hands and start singing songs and play something nice together.  Not fighting.  Not hitting.  Not kicking. Let’s all just be friends, take turns and share our toys.   

Luckily I didn’t embarrass my son and everyone else in the room.  I also noticed that I was the only woman there.  I sat down.  The fight was fascinating.  The coach was right next to the fighters, shouting “Stop!” and “Fight!” in regular intervals.  The boys worked hard to get some good kicks and hits on the opponent’s body.

After getting over the first shock of seeing people fighting (!) I enjoyed the games and cheered as someone got a good kick or a clever boxing move going.  After all, this was not random street fight: there were strict rules and certain moves that the boys were allowed to use.  And the coach was never more than two steps away from the fighters. 

All the competitors were sitting around the rink, waiting for their turn.  The fights of the advanced group were exciting.  I started to plan my son's future in kickboxing.  The youngest guys were adorable: we were all smiling as they flung their skinny arms and little legs around and all my motherly instincts told me to go and hug them right there and then.  I'm sure they wouldn't have liked it so I didn't.  But I hugged them in my heart.     

Our son won both of his fights and we cheered like - proud parents? - when he did his cool looking swing-around-and-kick-move.  

All my previous experience from my offspring's competition was girls rhythmic gymnastics.  Their biggest worry is to look pretty in their sparkly leotards and to have a beautiful routine with catchy music. 

This was different: blood, sweat and tears. 

But somehow very suitable for boys.  Oh, the things I will learn as I parent two sons!

Kotikoulusta - viides vuosi menossa

Kävin lukemassa ensimmäisen koulupäivän kokemuksia esikoisen kanssa.  Nyt on jo viides vuosi kotikoulua meneillään.  Mitä olemme oppineet?

Lapset ovat onneksi oppineet suomalaisen oppisuunnitelman mukaisesti ihan kaikkea sitä, mitä suomalaiset ikätoverinsakin.  Seuraamme edelleen aika tarkoin Suomessa tapahtuvaa opetusta.  Käytämme suomalaisia koulukirjoja ja olen tyytyväinen siihen, että en joudu itse improvisoimaan tuntisuunnitelmia.  Ilman kirjastoa se ei onnistuisikaan.



Olen hankkinut koulukirjojen lisäksi useita "opettavaisia" lastenkirjoja ja lukukirjoja. Kuvassa on muutamia karttakirjoja.  Erityisesti tuo iso valkoinen Lasten Atlas on ollut pienten suosikki, ja eläinrakas kuopus on oppinut siitä jännittäviä sanoja päivittäiseen käyttöön, kuten "jättiläiskalmari" ja "kampasarvinen".

Kumpikaan koululainen ei kärsi oppimisvaikeuksista eikä mikään muukaan sensorihäiriö tuo meille erityisopetuksen tarvetta.  Olen tästä todella kiitollinen.  En tiedä miten olisin osannut, jos koulunkäyntiin olisi tarvittu erityisopetusta.  Lapsemme ovat ihan tavallisia lapsia, mikä on ihanaa :)

Lukujärjestys - ollako vai eikö olla? 

Yllä pojan näkemys luonnontiedon tunneista.

Olemme seuranneet erilaisia lukujärjestyksiä vuosien varrella.  Meidän lapset haluavat lukujärjestykset ja aloittaisivat tunnit mielellään juuri minuutilleen.  Olen yrittänyt alentaa rimaa ja selitän, että koska olemme kotona ja en ole pelkkä opettaja, en voi taata järkkymätöntä aikataulun seuraamista.  Pikkusisarukset ovat edelleen osa päiväämme ja talossa on muutakin kuhinaa, jossa minua tarvitaan siellä ja täällä.  Odotuksia ei siis voi vaatia toteutumaan, vaikka yritämme.  Toivon, että lapset oppivat joustavuutta ja itsenäisyyttä tämän avulla.

Sisarusten yhteisoppimisen voi järjestää näinkin: isosisko harjoittelee ääneenlukemista ja pikkuveli opettelee laskemaan viiteen.  Vau-kirjan numeroseikkailut ovat olleet hyvä apu matikkajutuissa.  Esim. kakkoskirjassa käydään läpi parit, seiskakirjassa viikonpäivät ja kirja kaksitoista opettaa kellonaikoja.



Tammikuussa kun koulu jatkui kahden viikon joululoman jälkeen, tein lukujärjestyksestä yksinkertaisen  mallin, jossa on joka päivä sama järjestys.  Tämä sopii meille paremmin kuin se hullutus, että joka päivä suunnitelmat vaihtuu ja aineet pomppivat paikasta toiseen.
Tällä hetkellä opiskelemme seuraavasti (kellonajat suuntaanäyttäviä):

Uskontoahan ei suomalaisessa koulussa ole kuin tunti, ehkä kaksi viikossa.  Me pidämme uskontoa neljä kertaa viikossa.  Maanantaisin kerron kertomuksen, joka on joko suoraan Raamatusta tai joku kristillistä moraalia avaava kertomus. Tällä hetkellä käymme läpi lasten hartauskirjaa, josta luen englanniksi tekstin ja josta suomeksi puhumme.  Seuraavaksi otan Isä meidän-rukouksesta kertovan lukukirjan esiin.

Tiistaisin käymme läpi Vanhan Testamentin Sananlaskuja.  Keskiviikkona on Raamattumaratonin vuoro ja torstaina teemme koulun uskontokirjoista jonkin luvun.  Perjantaiaamuisin lapset opiskelevat historiaa isänsä kanssa.  Apuna on hyvä kirja A Little History of the World.



Äidinkielessä lapset ovat osa Kulkuri-etäkoulun nettitunteja.  Vuosien varrella mukavat opettajat ja ympäri maailmaa asuvat luokkatoverit ovat tulleet tutuiksi.  Lapset nauttivat Kulkurin tehtävistä, joita tehdään koulukirjan ja netistä löytyvän materiaalin avulla.  Kulkurin sivuilla puuhataan neljä päivää viikossa.  Keskiviikkoisin pidämme kirjoitus-ja lukutunnin.   Annan silloin 5-luokkalaiselle kirjoitustehtävän ja 3-luokkalainen harjoittelee käsialaa, kirjoittaa aineen tai lukee suomenkielistä kirjaa.  Nämä tehtävät olen ottanut oppilaan tarpeiden mukaan lukujärjestykseen.

Matikassa seuraamme koulukirjoja ja minulla on opettajan oppaat!  Ihana apu, ja niissä on juuri sitä vinkkiä, joita kaipaan päässälaskuihin, leikkeihin ja valmiita monisteita eriyttämiseen ja lisätehtäviin.  Kotona on tulostin, jossa voi myös kopioida sivuja.  Helppoa helppoa!

Kotikoulussa opettaja voi jättää jälkensä opettajan oppaisiin:



Lounaan jälkeen hajoaa yhteinen järjestys ja kumpikin oppilas tekee niitä muita luokkatasonsa tehtäviä.  Viitosluokalla on fysiikka-kemiaa, biologia-maantietoa, historiaa ja enkkua.  Kolmosluokkalaisella on ympäristö-oppia ja enkkua.

Taideaineet - apua! 

Iltapäivään on jätetty myös käsityöt ja kuvaamataito.  Niissä on todenmukaista painottaa sanaa jätetty.  Puuhaamme joskus projekteja, kuten joulusukkien ompelua tai pupuhäkkien rakentamista.  Lapset tykkäävät kumilenkkiaskarteluista ja punoivat ystävyysrannekkeita syksyllä.  Kangaspuut odottavat alkuunasettelua.  Mutta hyvin hajanaista on meidän käsityötuntisuunnittelu ollut.



Kuvaamataidossa olemme vielä surkeammassa jamassa.  Materiaalia olen haalinut, mutta emme saa aikaiseksi.  Onneksi lapset tykkäävät piirtää, maalata vesiväreillä ja askarrella ihan muutenkin.  Suunnitteilla on ottaa maalit esiin joku viikonloppu ystäväperheen lasten kanssa.  Ehkä joskus löytyy se täydellinen viikonloppu tälle :)



Musiikissa leijonanosan työstä on tehnyt taitava musiikinopettaja.  Kotona on isoja ja pienempiä soittimia, ja olen opettanut nokkahuilun soiton molemmille.  Jos panostaisin musiikissa teoriapuoleen, voisimme käydä läpi muutamia suuria säveltäjiä...  Ideoita on  tässäkin aineessa olemassa, mutta käytäntö tökkii.  Netissä on kyllä paljon puuhaa enkunkielellä tarjolla.

Liikunnassa olen vain iloinen siitä, että molemmilla on aktiiviharrastukset ja halua liikkua.  Rytminen voimistelu ja potkunyrkkeily ovat iltapäivisin, joka päivä, jos haluamme.  Kotona käytetään rullaluistimia, potkulautoja ja pyöriä ja poika pelaa kavereiden kanssa jalkapalloa ja lentopalloa.

Vietämme aamupäivät usein samassa huoneessa ja silloin voi eskarilainen innostua tekemään omia juttujaan koululaisten tarvikkeilla:



Kuvassa näkyvä Lars Klintingin eläinkirja on ehdottomasti paras aiheeseen liittyvä opas.  Harmi kyllä ostin neliosaisesta sarjasta aikoinaan vain tämän yhden kirjan.  Sain hankittua Huuto-netin kautta Klintingin lintukirjankin, mutta puu- tai hyönteiskirjaa en ole vielä löytänyt.  Jos sinulla on kaapeissa havillisena, ostan ne mielelläni!

Alakoululaisten opettamisessa ei ole mitään stressiä.  Materiaali on lapsille helppoa, joskus jopa tylsää.  Aineita on ihmeellisen vähän, lisäsimme tuon perjantain englanninkielisen historian tunnin, koska miksi ei? Kotikoulussa voi myös panostaa lapsen kiinnostuksen kohteeseen enemmän aikaa.  Esim. esikoinen tykkää piirtää ja poika valmistaa itse leluja kavereiden kanssa. Olemme vierailleet Yhdysvaltojen suurlähetystön ylläpitämässä kirjastossa, ja siellä on tarjolla mahdoton määrä lasten tietokirjoja ja oppimateriaalia.

Vaikeinta minulle on valmistautuminen.  Joskus valmistelen etukäteen, mutta useimmiten ehdin tunnin alussa tai aikana monistaa, kopioida ja klikata netistä esiin aiheeseen liittyvää materiaalia.  Yritämme ahkeroida kevään tunteja valmiiksi, jotta saamme varmasti kesäkuun alkuun mennessä kaiken valmiiksi.

Opettajan haasteet ovat toki yksilöllisiä lasten kohdalla.  Yksi tarvitsee motivointia, toinen ajankäytön ohjausta.  Onneksi kotikoulussa on aikaa ja mahdollisuutta joskus vain lukea kivaa kirjaa sohvanurkassa lapsi kainalossa.
