Spring in Central Asia

If there ever was a 'right' time to visit Central Asia, spring would be it!
Weather is getting warmer, with day time temperatures on average up to 15 C (60 F),
or on sunny days even well over 20 C (80 F).
And the nature. The nature, it is amazing!
The hills that first have been depressingly brown and gray and dusty in the fall, and later depressingly brown and gray and muddy for the winter, turn sweet green almost overnight. First flowers, wild tulips and irises and tiny yellow flowers I do not recognize appear everywhere and it is beautiful!

The fruit trees start blooming, and that is why I climbed upstairs this morning and spent a long time trying to get a picture of our plum tree flowers that would be in focus.
I need to read the manual.

The cherry tree is blooming as well, but I have to pull the tape off the living room windows in order to open it in order to get a close up shot of the flowers.
But I am enjoying the weather soooo much.

We are planning what to plant in the garden. I am trying to remember to water the rose sticks we put into the ground in the front of our house. We are hoping they will make roots and start growing. Most of the times it is that easy here. You put a stick to the ground and it starts growing!

Here is a picture of 'our' climbing rose. It blooms once a summer, May-June, and it was one of the reasons why we wanted to rent this house almost three years ago.

Suklaakakun resepti

Senteiksi muutettuina vuoka on 23 x 33. Kakusta tulee mukavan korkea, mutta jos käytät esim. laajempaa uunivuokaa, saat luonnollisesti litteämmän kakun. Seuraa silloin paistumista tarkemmin, ettei kakku kärähdä!

Paista n. 30-35 minuuttia keskilämpöisessä uunissa.

Kuinka moni tietää kuinka kuuma on keskilämpöinen uuni?

Resepti:

7,5 dl jauhoja
2 tl ruokasoodaa
5 rkl kaakaojauhetta
5 dl sokeria
1 tl suolaa

1,6 dl ruokaöljyä
(2tl vanilijauutetta)
5 dl vettä
2 rkl etikkaa.

Hyvää Naistenpäivää!

Maaliskuun kahdeksas päivä on kansallinen vapaapäivä.

Erityisesti kiinnitin huomiota Mariasta kertovaan osioon.

Rohkaisevia kohtia:
Jumala on minun pelastajani.

Playing house

Here is our house three years ago.

Local homes are build around a court yard. Rooms surround the yard, and often almost all the rooms have their own outside door. Toilet and kitchen are often in the far back corner of the yard. Actually we have a 'western' style house... without the kitchen that is in the back of the yard. But it is so easy to put the kids to bed when the bathroom is right there!

This is how our yard looked like when we got it (picture). It is pretty normal to have hard mud 'floor' on the yard...it is easy to sweep clean, and sweeping is a big thing here (it is worth a posting of its own!). People might or might not have plants; roses, tomatoes, potatoes... But almost every house will have grapevines.

In our house the grapevines are really really high. But the shade...it is amazing! In the heat of a summer day our yard stays much cooler than the street.

I promised some after shots as well... here is how our yard looks now:

Isn't it nice what a little grass and painted fence can do?

This was the kitchen when we visited the house for the first time...

And this was left for us after the previous renters moved out (we painted the walls light yellow). The sink is really pretty! And it is good to have tile and a hot water heater. It is very good! On the right corner of the picture you can see a little bit of the new cabinets we bought. We did not have the mental energy to start ordering custom made cabinets, and we settled with this cute ready set.

This is how the new cabinets look. And the new Korean stove. We are pretty happy with our kitchen...it is light and big enough to have a family dinner table in it.

Welcome!

Home sweet home - Oma koti kullan kallis

When we arrived in this country three years ago, we lived in someone else's house first (picture). We knew it would be for six months, and by the end of the time the owners would come back, and we would have to move out! So when we had three months left, we started to look for a place to live.

How would you do that in your country? Riffle through newspaper 'House' section? Browse the net? Call an agency? Ask someone.....ask anyone? We chose the latter.

We put our baby in the stroller and started walking through the neighborhoods that we might want to live in. We looked at the houses and stopped to chat with people on the street. 'Hello! How are you? Are you from this neighborhood? Would you like to rent your house to us?'.

It is good to be brave.

Some people actually showed us some rooms in their house, but we really wanted to rent a whole house, thank you. Not just the two little back rooms.

We walked through a lot of neighborhoods, and talked to many people.

There were houses that were being built. 'It will be ready in two weeks!'. Yeah, right. Two months, minimum!
There were houses with kitchens in the cellar, mud floors and walls. I did not want to think about cooking in the winter and having just a little vent to let in daylight. And where would my children be while I cooked in the mudroom?
There were huge houses with huge rooms with amazing remodeling...how would you ever heat such rooms in the winter?

Some people we knew found people they knew who had an aunt or cousin or sister's husband's uncle who might want to rent their house for us. We checked many houses. One yard had a cow in it. 'Where would you put your cow if we rented this house?' we asked. They shrugged. They would find a relative who had room in the yard.

Time passed. We did not know the owners of the house where we were staying at. They could be wonderful people, but I doubt they would want to live with us. So we looked and looked and looked and looked.

Finally our friend's neighbor knew about this guy who rents his house. Maybe this would work. My husband went to check it out. Then he said he liked it, and we went to see it together. This is the first thing we paid attention to.

It was a combination of two yards, so it was big.

But it was not being built.
It did not need remodeling.
It had a working heating system.
It had water heaters.
It had an inside bathroom (and an outside one too, if you felt picky).
AND IT HAD A SAUNA.

We will take it!

Tomorrow I will show more pictures of the house...before and after.

Central Asian Living

Keski-Aasian kutsu? Olin ajatellut tätä nimeä vähän niinkuin "Erämaan kutsu" ja "Lakeuden kutsu"- tyylillä. Mutta se näyttää ja kuulostaa niin uskonnolliselta.

Atlas-silkki? Se on Keski-Aasian erikoisuutta, riemunkirjavaa silkkikangasta, josta naiset teettävät upeita mekkoja. Voisi kuvastaa värikästä elämää täällä. Mutta ei tämä nyt mikään käsityöblogikaan ole...

Bazaari?

Kuuluisa lehti Martha Stewart Living on kodinhoidon taitoon perustuva menestyksekäs lehti.

Determination part 2

When the solutions 1 and 2 had failed us, we had to get serious. I got an idea. Let's have a half door that can be closed from OUTSIDE ONLY. This should keep curious toddler and pets in the yard.

Solution 3:

Great. Well, it took some reminding to teach the visiting children always to close the little door when they came in or left. But it kinda worked.

Until one day I come out, glance to the left and I just need to go get my camera.

Here he is, full of determination.
Remember, when he wants something, it is not an hindrance, it is a challenge!

Uh-oh, he could not reach for the lock. Needs to come down...

And rearrange the chairs.

He is having great time...chewing his gum...escaping the yard...

Did it work?

No.

Rearrange again, reach, and ...

YES!

I'm outta here!

Where is he going?

As he is running to a neighbor, he is calling his friend's name...

...and the friend was available!

"I just wanted to play with my friend!"

Determination

We have a little boy with curly blond hair. With his hair he looks like a little lamb, and sometimes I call him 'my lamb with curly fleece'. He does not mind.

However, when it comes to his temperament, I would not compare it to a lamb.

I have to admit I am in no way an expert in lamb behavior or temperament, and I might be completely wrong when I think of a soft, gentle animal when I talk about lambs.

But our 'lamb' is loud and he know what he wants. Usually the wrong thing. But at least we can hear him wanting it. Sometimes he gets unusually quiet, and then we start running. This one morning I just had to go get the camera.

A little background: When we moved into our house two and half years ago, our great concern was the safety of our children. We knew they would just crawl into any hole and touch any electrical wire that was left sticking out of the wall, Central Asian style. Our street is not very busy, but at the very end of it runs a deep, fast canal full of cold water. I just could see my children going there on a hot sunny day to watch their friends swim, and !

Like all the houses in our neighborhood, we have a high wall surrounding the yard. Then we have two huge metal gates that can be opened for a car or a wheelbarrow. They are closed when not in use. Next to our main gate is a door. It is where people go in and out, and it is always open during the day.

Being a busy toddler he was, he already ran away not soon after we moved in and I had to run around the block looking for him. First I went to the canal, fear gripping my heart, but a neighbor lady washing her clothes on the street told me that she had not seen him going by. I ran the other way and saw a school girl in her black and white school uniform. She recognized me as a worried mom and told that our blond boy had passed her, crying. I hurried to the next intersection. As I looked right I could see him, in the middle of the narrow, dusty road, unpacking his little back-bag. I was relieved! The only thing he had put into his back-bag was his Baby's First Bible book. It was so cute. But it got us worried.

So we had a solution 1: We just keep the door closed at all times.

The problems were plentiful and we knew immediately that solution one was a goner.
First, whenever anyone wanted to come see us, borrow canning equipment, buy coal, sell milk, ask for booze, beg, play with our Legos, see our baby, admire our garden, ask for a job, learn to knit, use our sauna (all of this has happened) etc. they would have to bang on the gate and wait on the street. That would require that we run to the door a million times a day. No thank you.

Secondly, it would look really uninviting, even impolite to have the door to our yard locked during the day. We wanted people to feel free to walk and peek into our lives.

Thirdly: our oldest daughter knew how to open the gate but would forget to close it.

Solution 2:

Solution 2 was a big piece of plywood supported by two Russian propane tanks.
Great, we thought. This way the door can be open and welcoming. If someone wants to come all the way to the yard, well, they can just call and we will come and help them through.
The problem was, our little lamb pulled down the plywood the moment he saw it. I don't understand how, but it did not stay up.

...to be continued...

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

Käsi ylös, jos osaat selittää blogini pitkänpitkän otsikon. Hhmmm?

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious tarkoittaa englanninkielellä suurinpiirtein: "Atoning for educability through delicate beauty". Jätän tämän lausekimurantin suomennoksen ammattilaiskääntäjille!

Sana on myöskin musikaalissa selitetty näin: "something to say when you have nothing to say"!

Tervetuloa blogiini - Welcome to my blog!
