Tässä Luukkaan evankeliumista Enkeli Gabrielin viesti Sakariaalle.

Luukas 1:11-17.

Askartelimme lasten kanssa paperista enkeli Gabrielin, Sakariaan, Elisabetin ja Johanneksen. Lapsia kiinnosti perheen sukunimi.

Mies heitti siihen "Varmaan Kastaja!".

Minusta olisi kiva jos tuolla lailla ilmoitettaisiin lapsen nimi.

"Sinun on laitettava hänelle nimi..."

Selvä!

Poikavauvalle kun oli niin vaikea keksiä nimeä!

Mutta Jumala oli miettinyt nimenkin valmiiksi...

nimillä on siis merkitystä.

Johannes, hebreaksi יוֹחָנָן (Yochanan), tarkoittaa:

Yahweh is gracious eli

'Jumala on armollinen, laupias, hyväntahtoinen, suopea...'

Joy to The World - The Third Advent

If there is one word to describe children -- joy!

It was so joyful to celebrate the third Advent today with children.

We sang songs. And banged on the table. And pulled the tablecloth down.

And kept going to the Christmas tree to pull down the decorations. And laughed.

Oh, it was great!

For some reason (because it is fun!) the kids put on hats...girls had their summer hats on.

And the first candle...prophets...expectation...hope...

...second one...true peace is coming...

and the third candle...joy!

Our little friends' second name is Joy, so it was perfect!

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Erilainen kuusenkoriste

Haluan esitellä keskiaasialaista käsityötaitoa teille lukijoilleni. Tämä pieni koriste, tämä söpö joulukoriste, on pienoismalli paikallisten morsianten käyttämistä hatuista. Kyllä, Keski-Aasiassa on tapana, että häitä seuraavan vuoden ajan morsiamet käyttävät kauniita, koristeltuja hattuja päässään aina kun liikkuvat kodin ulkopuolella. Se on minusta kiva tapa!

Jotta saisit nähdä hatut oikeassa mittakaavassa, pyysin ystävääni Barbieta esittelemään hatut suurelle yleisölle. Barbie oli oikein kiireinen tyttöjen leikeissä, mutta tämä sinihiuksinen oli ainoa, jolla oli vaatteet päällä.

Hattuja tekevät köyhät kyläläisnaiset. Käsitöiden tekeminen ja niiden myyminen on monelle elintärkeää...monet heistä ovat todella köyhiä.

Hatut ovat kaikki ainutlaatuisia. Kankaita on monenvärisiä ja -tyylisiä. Naiset ompelevat hattuihin helmistä ja kankaasta erilaisia koristeita. Ihan niinkuin oikeissakin morsiushatuissa.

Tässä on keskiaasialaisesta Atlas-silkistä valmistettu hattu.

Tämä on myös Atlas-hattu, eri värisenä. Värejä on kymmenittäin jo pelkässä Atlaksessa.

Christmas Memories

One night I was looking through our Christmas pictures from the past years. I so enjoy seeing s n o w! Here in Central Asia we get it after New Year, if we are lucky!

I will share pictures from the time before Central Asia, bCA!

The first picture is from our very first apartment as a married couple. We had one bedroom, spacey bathroom, and a good sized living room with a kitchen in one end. Kitchenette, I guess. For Christmas we put a string of lights around the living room/kitchenette windows, and the traditional triangle light.

Here is some kind of Christmas craft going on. I did not have my own sewing machine then, but I could borrow (or rent...don't remember) one from the apartment cooperation. As you can see, I have to have a cup of tea with me at all times... Now I am feeling nostalgic about the start shaped golden plate...It is back in Finland, carefully wrapped in packing materials. But I do have the two crocheted angels here! I bought them in one of the handicraft shops in the city and I still like them a lot. The green envelopes are for our Christmas cards....the table is unpainted...we painted it very light creamy yellow later. I like the curtains a lot...deep colors, but I just love them for Christmas!

This is from our second apartment. In this one we had a very cute and nice little kitchen. This time we have a golden star with lights in the window...also very traditional in Finland. I put our Christmas cards on the window, and there is some kind of light system going on in the balcony. There is also a bird feeder out there. We would fill it, full of hope, and about three birds would come daily to eat. No matter what we tried...sun flower seeds, other kinds of seeds, pure fat, fat and nuts, nuts and seeds, special seeds, special fat'n nuts sandwich...the birds just would not come. Except these three. Even though you can see the forest starting very near to our house, I think it was not close enough for the wild birds.

There is a fun story going with the blue curtains. I was shopping with my mom and sister in a big department store. We would wander through everything, somewhat together but still going our separate ways every now and then. I was browsing through the materials, and then I saw this material. It had different shades of blue and aqua, some green, and then this adorable curly flower vine thing going up and down. It even had touch of glittering gold here and there, but you cannot see it in this dim picture. It looked a bit Indian, but was not too foreign and wild. It was one of the prettiest material I have ever seen, still is! I wanted to buy it...but the price... Anyway, I wandered somewhere else, and then my mom came to me. 'I saw one really beautiful material out there, just come and tell me what do you think' she said. I followed her, and she walked directly to this blue dream material! We had fun and complimented each other for our great taste! My sister actually did not like the material! I did not buy it on that trip, but some time later my husband stopped in there just to pick up enough for my kitchen curtains. And my mom has this material in her house too!

Speaking of which...we spent all the Christmases in my parents house...This is an ice lantern with a candle inside. It is also a very popular decoration during winter time in Finland. They are easy to make and really beautiful on those dark days and nights.

And this is my moms Christmas window in the kitchen. We have had the paper birds as long as I can remember, and they move from place to place in the house each year. They look really pretty around a 'sheaf' on the wall. People keep some sheaves for winter feeding of the birds, and if you take some ears of wheat and tie them together, you can hang it on the wall and arrange the birds around it. Another corn of wheat and bird thing hanging on the window...and again this traditional triangle light...this one with seven candles...a red Mexican Flame Leaf. We always have lots of flowers for Christmas.

Oh, the memories...that is one of the best parts of Christmas...and now we are making the memories for our children!

Toinen Adventti

Vietimme pienen perheadventin olohuoneessa. Lauloimme iki-ihania joululauluja ja lapset saivat sytyttää kaksi kynttilää. Taustamusiikkina tietenkin "Nyt sytytämme kynttilän...", äidin haparoidessa säveltä.

Adventtikynttilänjalkana on perinteinen sydänkoristeinen metallijalka. Taisi olla 2 mk kun sen ostin nuoruusvuosien kirpparikierroksilla.

Ei ollut valkoisia kynttilöitä, mutta vihreähän on joulun väri...

Ja tulevasta kuninkaasta löytyy ennustuksia läpi vuosisatojen...

Toinen adventtikynttilä on rauhan kynttilä.

Christmas in the kitchen

I have to admit that I am still putting up Christmas decorations. It will happen through December whenever I find them and have time to think of a good place for each thing.

One traditional decoration is this candle holder that we brought with us from Finland. It is very traditional sight at Christmas time in Finland. The electric candle holder has five or seven candles and it's usually triangle shaped.

Of course it looks much more attractive in dark...but I took the pictures in full (cloudy) daylight.

I have seen in several pictures how people put their ginger bread cookie cutters in glass jars. It looks beautiful and I tried it, but the mouth of my jars is so small that I could not fit them all in. And I do not have that many metal cutters anyway (I DO have some plastic yellow and red ones for children, but they are not as pretty!). So I arranged these on a Central Asian wooden bowl.

The flower will always be the ginger bread cookie shape for me.

And it does not have any pointed edges that would burn!

We will start baking next week. The children cannot wait...and neither can I.

Christmas towels are up. No, these are not for use! What are you thinking?

I was very happy to find red material for Christmas curtains few years back. It has tulips that I love at Christmas time. Red...or white...in a vase with greens like fur tree branches...lovely!

This is an ancient tray that has traveled everywhere. Hence the scrapes.

Winter feeding of birds is a must in Finland.

Not here.

The birds are still feasting in our persimmon trees.

Merry Berry Advent time for you!

Joulunaikaa, jouluntaikaa...

Ja huomenna on sitten joulukuu. Lapset hurrasivat kuorossa kun kerroin, että nyt saa kääntää kalenterissa uuden kuukauden näkyville. Toinen haluaa huomenna lumiukon tekoon. Toinen aikoo syödä jääpuikkoja. Talvi on kuulemma niiiin ihanaa aikaa.

Ja onhan se joulukuu ihanaa. Adventti eli odotuksen aika.

Pieniä yllätyksiä ja kivaa yhdessä tekemistä.

Kodin koristelua juhlaa varten.

Ja odottamista...

Luimme lapsille Jesajan kirjeestä ennustuksia tulevasta Vapahtajasta.

"Kansa, joka pimeydessä vaeltaa, näkee suuren valkeuden;

jotka asuvat kuoleman varjon maassa, niille loistaa valkeus...

Sillä lapsi on meille syntynyt, poika on meille annettu, jonka hartioilla on herraus, ja hänen nimensä on: Ihmeellinen neuvonantaja, Väkevä Jumala, Iankaikkinen Isä, Rauhanruhtinas."

Tämä on minun lempipaikkoja joulunaikaan.

Olen sen monena vuotena kirjoittanut joulukortteihinkin.

Jesaja, kuten muutkin Jumalan profeetat, puhui pelastuksesta, jonka Jumala oli luvannut tulevan. "Jumalan salainen pelastussuunnitelma", kuten eräs lastenraamattu sitä kutsuu.

Sekasorron, epävarmuuden, kuolemanpelon ja epäoikeudenmukaisuuden keskellä elävät löytävät lohdutuksen...siitä, että Jumala on sittenkin se, joka sanoo viimeisen sanan...että tulee aika, jolloin "hän on pyyhkivä kaikki kyyneleet heidän silmistänsä"...rauha tulee vallitsemaan...ja kaikista ihmeellisin lupaus "eikä kuolemaa ole enää oleva" asettuu voimaan.

Niinpä sytytämme ensimmäisenä adventtina Toivon kynttilän.

Syyspuuhia - Autumn jobs

Meillä on ollut aivan ihana syksy. Ilmat on viilentynyt, mutta kun aurinko paistaa päivittäin, lämpötilakin on mukavasti parissakymmenissä.

We have had a really wonderful fall weather here. It is cooler, but the sun is shining daily and it is still warm during the day.

Lapset pakotettiin auttoivat pihapuuhissa...lehtiä aina riittää. Täällä lakaistaan melkein päivittäin. (Kuopuksella oikea tantta-ilme.)

Children were forced were helping with outside jobs...there are always leaves. We sweep almost every day. (My youngest looks like she is ready to tackle the yard.)

Isoveli vilahtaa taustalla. Kantelee taas kissaa sinne tänne.

Big brother in the background. Carrying our cat here and there with him.

Reipas lakaisija. Nämä on näitä käsintehtyjä luutia.

What a good helper. We use hand made brooms.

Ihaninta noissa pienissä on se taapertelu kaikkien ympärillä,

kaikki kiinnostaa ja kaikkeen pitää koskea.

The little ones have this wonderful way of toddling around you,

everything is interesting and they want to touch everything.

Melkein valmista! Sitten olikin lämpimän kaakaon ja kakkujen aika (lapset ei halua KUUMAA kaakaota, sen pitää olla lämmintä). Tässä näkyy hienosti uusi hymy; kolo ylähampaissa.

Almost there! Then it was time for some warm drinking chocolate and cakes (our children do not want to have HOT chocolate, it needs to be warm). Notice the new smile; now missing two front teeth!
