How to decorate with a real tree inside

Our centerpiece: a real cherry tree!

Every Christmas I try to think a new, creative way to decorate our home for the annual Christmas party.  Because Christmas is so invisible here in Central Asia, I love to decorate a lot at home for the season.  I want our guests to ooh and aah when they enter our house...so we decorate and have Christmas music playing and serve wonderfully fragrant mulled wine (juice) - to serve all our senses.   

Last summer we lost two cherry trees.  We were a bit disappointed because we had pruned the small tree carefully hoping to have a good fruit bearing cherry.  When my husband cut the dried up trees down, he decided to save the little one...knowing my attraction to weird unusual decoration ideas in the house.

Then in December he bought spray paint and sprayed the tree white.  In Finland trees are white with frost in the winter and I wanted this to be our frosty winter wonderland tree. 

Central Asian decorative lights are all very colorful, but we had bought white string of lights....somewhere and its cold bluish color was perfect for my winter tree.  

One problem to overcome was to decide how the tree would stand.  With lots of children around it was important to protect the tree from falling.  Then I remembered our garden table that has a hole in the middle for a shade umbrella.  Perfect!  As our dinner table was long and I didn't want to cut the table cloth material in half, I just made a hole in the material for the tree.  It will still be plenty good for a dress! :) 

For decorations I used silver and white ornaments, my glass icicles and snowflakes.

Ei ihan perinteinen joululiina

Viimeksi olin lähdössä joululiinan hakuun.  

Mielessä oli hillitty harmaa, ehkä hopeansävyinen kangas, viime Joulu kun oli perinteisen punainen. 

Harmi kyllä kaupungin paras kangasbasaari on lopetettu ja uusi basaari oli minulle ihan vieras.

En löytänyt niitä parhaita kangaskasoja, joista olen monesti löytöjä tehnyt.  

Löysin kuitenkin kivan mekkokankaan, joka päätyi Joulujuhlien pöydälle! 

Sinistä, valkoista ja ripaus hopeaa...

Sitä ostin monta metriä, jotta varmasti riitti.  

Muina pöytäkoristeina oli kynttilöitä ja valkoista nauhaa...paljon ei mahdu, kun Juhlassa pöytään laitettiin kaikki juomat ja muut kattaukset.  

Ensi kesänä minulla on tästä kankaasta mekko!

Ja riittää kyllä tyttärillekin, kun tuli sen verran ostettua :) 

O Tannenbaum

Kyllä kuusipuu on vain niin Jouluinen muoto!

Ostin viime kesänä pitkän rimpsun puisia punaisia helmiä,

mielessä väikkyi jo Jouluiset koristelut.

En laittanutkaan helmiä kuuseen, vaan tein niistä kuusen

makuuhuoneen skandinaaviseinälle. 

Ketjua jäi vielä vähän jäljelle, ja siihen ripustan kuvaJoulukalenteria...

Halusin ottaa lähikuvia helmistä, mutta juuri silloin

 kamerasta simahti patteri.  

Nyt ei ole oikein suosiota tällä mun valokuvauksella!

Olen tänä Jouluna aivan ihastunut kransseihin!  Olen väkertänyt jo kolme valmiiksi ja yksi iso on tuloillaan.  Laitoin lapsetkin tekemään kransseja ja he saivatkin kolme pientä tehtyä, kukin omalla tyylillään.  Laitan kuvia niistä omista vähän myöhemmin kun ehdin ottamaan päivänvalon aikaan kameran käteen.

Sinne säästelen muitakin koristeluvinkkejä joulua varten.  

Järjestämme perinteisesti Joulujuhlan kodissamme ja se on jo perjantaina.  Iik!  Perinteiseen tapaan keskityn koristeluun, jälkiruokiin ja glögin keittoon ja muut tuovat pötyä pöytään :)

Juhlaa varten täytyy lähteä basaaria kohti, pöytäliinoja varten olisi yksi värihaave ja pitää katsoa onko basaari yhtään samaa mieltä minun väriteemani kanssa.  Jos ei löydy, niin sorrutaan sitten viime joulun perinteisen punaisiin liinoihin.  Tai säädän jotain lakanoista ja kankaista :D

Today my big goal is to find material for tablecloths in the bazaar.  We are hosting our annual Christmas party on Friday and I'm happily preparing the decorations! 

Pink Shelf for a Little Princess

This is really more than a little shelf for our little princess. It is her own little corner in the shared room of three children.  

Her bed used to be next to the bunk bed where the big sister and big brother sleep.  But this fall I decided to move her bed further away. It's not so much for her peace and quiet; it's for the other kids' benefit.  See, our little girl falls asleep really slowly and keeps on talking the whole time :) 

So we thought this might (please!) calm things down a bit. 

So between the window corner of the room and the clothes cupboard is her bed and her shelf.  Her very own kingdom! 

My husband made her a little shelf and she wanted it to be pink. Three year olds have opinions! 

We used a heart shaped cookie cutter to make shaped holes at the end pieces of the shelf (those are hard to see in these pictures...I should take better ones!). 

We didn't get to choose the placement of the wall lamps; they were part of the room.  Luckily they were far enough from each other that we could just fit the clothes cupboard between them. 

For years we used just one and it always got broken.  This cute (outdoor) lantern seems to be more sturdy and I just love the magical feel of a lantern. It is so fun for her to read in the light of the lantern in the evenings and then turn it off by herself.

Pink princess shelf is for her own personal things.  Books to read in the evening in bed; her beloved Hello Kitty; her initial that I picked up from Goodwill last summer; new musical box that is constantly playing and a little bucket for little treasures.  

The rabbit is called Silkkitassu (Silk Paw), from Ikea.  

When the bed is made this is my favorite part of the room at the moment!  Other kids are getting their shelves later...they just painted one tonight and one is in the process of being sanded smooth.  It will be fun to have your own little shelf right next to your bed! 

Little Blue Owl

Our kids room remodeling is moving along sloooowly.

The main things are done; walls and floor.

Now we are working on shelves and hanging things back on the walls. 

Of course I am changing things around and coming up with new ideas: "Could we..."  or "I'd like to..."! 

But some things are done! Yahoo!

Remember this? 

It's the light switch.  It's not pretty, but it works so it stays.  You know how it always gets little dirty around the light switches?  Because of the way the walls are, we are not able to wash them, ever.  Otherwise we'll loose the finish.  

So I thought let's make something that will protect the wall around it! 

Here he is!

My husband got to use his new jigsaw and I got to use the paint brushes! 

First I wanted to paint the peak on to the light switch, but at the end we decided to leave it as it is. 

Maybe I should paint a branch on the wall for him to sit on? 

Joulunpunainen kiisseli

Onko teillä ruokia, joita lapset pyytävät tekemään?

Meillä se on kiisseli.

Itse olen syönyt lapsuudessa reservit täyteen kiisseleitä, joten en ole oikein ihastunut niihin.

Mutta onhan se pitänyt tämäkin herkku opetella tekemään, kun lapset ovat mummin ruokapöydässä päässeet hyvän makuun! 

Ja kun varastossa on monta itse säilöttyä lasitölkkiä kirsikkamehua, jotka pitäisi käyttää...Juomme sitä toki, mutta sehän oli myös oiva mehu mansikkakiisselin pohjaksi.  

Kiisseli:

1 litra marjamehua

5 rkl perunajauhoa

marjoja tai hedelmiä

Sekoita kylmä mehu ja perunajauhot.  Kuumenna koko ajan sekoittaen kunnes kiisseli on sakeutunut ja kiehahtaa kerran.

Lisää marjat.

Jos marjat tai hedelmät kaipaavat keittämistä (jos teet kiisselin esim. raaoista omenoista jotka pitää kypsentää), aloita mehulla ja hedelmillä.  Lisää perunajauhot kylmään vesitilkkaan ja valuta ohuena nauhana kuuman mehun joukkoon. Sekoita kunnes sakenee.

Jos haluat mehukeittoa, laita puolet vähemmän perunajauhoja.  

Nauti puurojen päällä tai kerman kanssa jälkiruokana.  

Nämä vanhat neuvostoaikaiset kulhot ovat aivan ihania!  Minulla on vain yksi mansikkakulho ja muutama muu kippo.  Nykyään täällä saa vain kiinalaista tuotantoa.  Harrrmi!

My kids beg me to make Finnish dessert "kiisseli".  It is thickened fruit or berry juice.  I used home made canned cherry juice and frozen strawberries.  Delicious on hot cereal or as a dessert with cream!
